How a stray dog chose her own future

The chase that changed everything!

After successfully returning a neutered stray dog I came across a mother dog. Curious I followed her and there they were: three tiny puppies on the road. They told me that two of their siblings had already been hit by cars, so I had to act. The area wasn’t safe with cars speeding by, so I took the mother and her pups to a safe place.

Later that evening, I got a disturbing call from my friend. One of the two pups I had placed there in foster care had died. All the symptoms pointed to parvo -> one of the deadliest diseases for puppies. The next morning, we rushed his sister to the vet and she tested positive for parvo immediately. We did everything we could, but despite our efforts, she didn’t make it through the night. It was really devastating 💔

I became deeply anxious about the mommy and her sons. A few days earlier, the parvo-infected pups had been in my car. I disinfect everything daily, but parvo is extremely contagious. Better safe than sorry, I decided to have the car professionally cleaned and rushed to them. I hadn’t planned to bring them into my home, but knowing the risk of parvo spreading, I took them in.

The plan was to let the mom nurse her puppies once a day (they didn’t need it anymore) to slowly scale it down and bring her back because there was a tiny chance there were still 3 puppies left. But she had other plans. Every time I tried to return her, she chased my car. I even released her in a different area where she could roam freely, but she jumped right into the car again. I tried this eight times and eventually, I gave up and decided she could stay too.

I returned to her old spot to ask around if anyone cared for her, but no one did. My daughter named her Núa. It symbolizes a fresh start. One where she’ll never have to live on the streets again and can look forward to a bright future! 🙏

That’s when I decided to find a loving foster home. Luckily I found one in my hometown, Maastricht. After one month, Núa flew to the Netherlands. They picked her up at Schiphol Airport and she’s now safe, happy, and loved!

Another wonderful fact:

All three puppies have been adopted!

Cake went to a loving family on Sint Maarten, Pie is heading to Saba soon and Waffle is flying to the Netherlands this Friday! From start to finish, it’s been a whirlwind of emotions — but I can proudly say this is a true rescue success story!

Saving one dog will not change the world, but for that one dog, the world will change forever 🫶🏼
